5 Ways To Build Your Online Athletic Identity

  • 14 Dec, 2016

As a student-athlete or professional player, you are always exposed in front of the media and everyone else across the Internet. It all starts with your online profile that reflects your image across all popular sites. It’s crucial to take some time and polish not only your Twitter and Instagram profiles but also all the other ones you may have. This will make you look more professional and help you stand out from your competition.

So how to get started? Read the five steps that help you make your online profile easy to remember and hard to forget.

5 Ways To Build Your Online Identity 1

1. Brand Yourself

Branding yourself is key to get you noticed and best of all, you can start here with a FREE sports profile. The only catch is that your profile needs to be updated consistently with the latest information, schedule, video highlights, photos and stats. Otherwise, it can affect your reputation if your profile is not well organized, informative and easy to follow.

When college coaches, agents or scouts search for you online, everything should look and feel the same across all your profile pages. It’s highly recommended to keep on using the same bio, header, profile photo and your goals. This method will help provide your audience with a high level of consistency and familiarity across the Internet.

2. Have Quality Profile Photos

You all remember the saying: “A picture is worth more than a thousand words”. You will always want to post or add your highest quality photos that are best representing yourself. Today, most smartphones have great photo cameras that with the right adjustments, lightening and angles can do a good job. There are also numerous apps that can help you edit the photos and make them more personalized.

A great idea would be that at the end of your games, you could ask your school’s media department if you can use any of the photos that have been taken and posted from your games or sport events. Please make sure you don’t infringe any image copyrights before trying to use those photos for your personal use. The quality of those photos usually comes in high resolution.

Another option is that you can have your picture taken professionally at a studio but that will cost you more. Basically, the more you spend the better the quality. But before you decide which way to go, do a little research to make sure that if you do spend your money at least you make it wisely.

You can also borrow a professional DSLR camera from your friends or family. Of course you can rent one as well but that comes at extra cost. Once you get the camera you will need someone responsible and a bit techy to help you set it up and use it properly.

3. A Well-Written Bio

I know some of us don’t like to write much or they simply think they can’t do it well enough. Well, you are in luck because you have lots of options and resources to choose from. To get started, you should write your own bio and then have your teachers or counselors help you revise it. Once you have a final and well-written version post the same bio across all your online profiles.

You should not hire a professional sports writer to create your bio unless money is not an issue. That’s more for the professional players whose images generate high revenue. Remember, for student-athletes it’s best if they stick with their teachers and advisors especially when looking to save money.

4. Great Looking Design

The design is the first thing that we see and therefor it’s the most appealing. Sometimes if we don’t like the design we slightly tend to lose our interest, curiosity and eventually we go some place else. The same goes for your online profile when trying to capture new audiences. The more appealing the design the more it will stand out from the rest of your competition.

At WeGotPlayers, our design team can help you create a custom background photo tailored to your goals and objectives. The photo can be optimized to a variety of all social-media background sizes. A well-designed background profile photo will help increase your online presence. Why? Your online image matters more than you can think.

5. Update Your Profile Constantly

As a player who strives to reach the next level, it’s very important that you always let your audience know the latest news and trends about yourself. In the sports industry most profiles have become more dynamic because they are updated frequently. This makes it easy to follow because there is lots of information that’s being shared.

For those players on our platform that have a PLUS or PRO account, the calendar profile feature is truly beneficial. Players can list all their future events that will be attending. That way college coaches, agents or scouts know where to see them play. We never know who may end up showing at those games.

A free and smart way to have your online profile stand out is to post and share valuable content via your WeGotPlayers wall. You can also post, comment and share information on your LinkedIn profile, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and the rest. A well-crafted online profile is a great tool to build and promote your identity, share your information and engage with your audience.
